Astrophotography is so unlike other forms of photography. As primarily a landscape photographer, the goal is to find a beautiful scene and pray for good light. In astrophotography, you pray for "good seeing," that is, a little disturbance of the atmosphere as possible, and you take lots and lots of frames. Most of the photographs in this gallery I call "Astroscapes," are comprised of literally hundreds and hundreds of photographs with a total exposure time around 10-24 hours of total exposure time. And as I use a monochrome camera, I take hundreds of frames using up to 7 different filters, Red, Green, Blue (this give me color if the object I am photographing is not an emission nebula), and Ha (Hydrogen), OIII (Oxygen) and SII (Sulphur) to capture the more common wavelengths of emission nebulae.
I love the fact that I can capture deep space objects (DSOs) from my backyard. But it is a different skill set, and one that I hope can produce some beautiful astrophotography photographs! So come along and let's explore the deep reaches of interstellar space and simply enjoy the beauty that can be found in such an inhospitable place!
