Merlotte 31 is the open cluster in the center of the photograph and is in the constellation Auriga. Just to the left of the open cluster sits the Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405). This nebula is a diffuse emission/reflection nebula. It surrounds the irregular variable star AE Aurigae, a runaway star believed to originate in the Orion’s Belt area in Orion constellation and is approximately 1,500 light years distant from Earth. In the upper right-hand corner is the Tadpoles Nebula, IC410. IC410 is a dusty emission nebula about 12,000 light years from Earth.
