Which size is right for your space?
- Living room (above sofa): 48x32 or 60x40 for visual balance
- Bedroom (above headboard): 36x24 or 48x32
- Dining room: 36x24 or 48x32, depending on wall size
- Home office or den: 30x20 or 36x24
- Large foyer or entryway: 48x32 or 60x40—go bold where first impressions matter
- Hallway, bathroom, or gallery wall: 18x12 or 24x16
When in doubt, go bigger than you think—undersized art is the most common mistake. The print should fill about ⅔ the width of the furniture beneath it.

About this photograph
As I stood near the foot of Bass Harbor Light near the water, the last rays of daylight danced across the sky, casting a warm glow on the approaching storm clouds. The lighthouse, a steadfast sentinel, stood proudly against the rocky coastline, its red beacon beginning to flicker to life. I felt the cool breeze brush against my skin, carrying the salty scent of the ocean, and I knew I had to capture this moment. The interplay of light and shadow created a magical scene, one that I was eager to preserve.
Bass Harbor Head Light sits at the southernmost tip of Mount Desert Island, perched on rocky cliffs above the water. Blue hour, the sun having set, but still some color and light in the storm clouds, creating ideal dramatic conditions—that contrast between warm light on the lighthouse and dark weather approaching from offshore.
The red beacon was beginning its evening cycle, adding a small but important point of warm light to anchor the composition. Positioning near the water's edge allowed me to include small tidal pools reflecting the light of the red beacon above, and the foreground rocks, with their textures and tidal patterns, providing scale and leading your eye up to the lighthouse on the cliff above.
The challenge was balancing exposure across a wide tonal range: bright sky where light was breaking through, dark storm clouds, shadowed rocks, and the white lighthouse tower. The shifting light kept changing the scene, requiring quick adjustments as clouds broke across the landscape.
Storm light and dramatic sky create tension and atmosphere while emphasizing the lighthouse's sentinel role.

Styling Suggestions:
- This piece would be stunning as a focal point in a living room or bedroom with a coastal or nautical theme. I'd suggest placing it above a navy blue or weathered wood sofa, complemented by natural fiber rugs and woven baskets for texture. Accent pillows in shades of pink and blue would tie the room together beautifully.
- Create a gallery wall: Pair this artwork with smaller black and white photographs of coastal scenes or nautical elements to create a dynamic gallery wall.
- Incorporate natural elements: Add driftwood sculptures, seashells, or smooth river stones as decorative accents to enhance the coastal atmosphere.
- Use textured fabrics: Introduce cable-knit throws, linen curtains, or a jute area rug to add depth and warmth to the space.
- Install ambient lighting: Use warm, dimmable lighting fixtures to mimic the soft glow of the sunset in the image.
- Add a reading nook: Place a comfortable armchair in a coordinating color near the artwork, along with a small side table and reading lamp, to create a cozy spot for relaxation.
- Use sheer curtains in a soft blue to filter light and create a dreamy atmosphere reminiscent of the misty coastal air.
