About the photograph
The Ponte Vecchio bridge stands as a timeless symbol of Florence, beautifully illuminated by the warm hues of sunset. This photograph captures the
The Ponte Vecchio at sunset—one of those scenes that's been photographed countless times, which means the challenge is finding an angle that feels fresh. I positioned myself along the Arno to capture how the bridge's medieval architecture interacts with the water, waiting for the moment when the warm evening light would illuminate the ochre buildings, creating strong reflections.
What makes the Ponte Vecchio unusual is that it's been continuously inhabited since the 14th century. Originally, butcher shops, then goldsmiths and jewelers, after the Medicis decided they wanted something less aromatic beneath their corridor. Those overhanging shops create the bridge's distinctive profile—you can see how they jut out over the water, built right to the edge.
I timed this shot for the blue hour transition, when there's still detail in the sky, but the bridge lights are beginning to show. The river acts as a second canvas, doubling the warm tones and creating a layered composition where you see both the physical structure and its mirrored counterpart.
The interplay between the bridge's golden stone and the blue-hour sky creates a color palette that works well in spaces where you want warmth without overwhelming the room.
